What tools do you need to start woodworking?

Start with a stable work surface, a square, a saw, a drill, clamps, sanding equipment and a plan for dust and personal protection. This kit brings those individual tools together for small indoor shelves, open boxes and organizers made from already surfaced boards. It assumes a separate, usable workspace with power and ventilation—not a living-room corner.

The premium path builds around a substantial bench and refined tools. The value path folds away and keeps the same dust-control and protection choices. Neither requires a table saw, jointer or thickness planer. Buy straight boards close to the width you need and let the supplier handle large cuts.

THE EQUIPMENT LIST

Each drill price includes its specified battery set and charger. Each path includes two assembly clamps, in addition to the bench’s workholding. The extractor and personal protection are shared choices. Confirm the exact Festool bundle and bench delivery before ordering.

Also include the small tools and consumables in the supplies checklist. Project lumber and finishing materials are separate.

Why these choices?

Put quality where you can feel it. The premium bench offers stable workholding; the Starrett improves the layout tool’s construction; the Festool drill adds handling refinement and a second battery; parallel clamps make small assemblies easier to support. The lower-cost choices retain those jobs rather than leaving the kit incomplete.

Published hands-on work supports specific decisions: Fine Woodworking tested the TXS 18 in 2024, GearLab compared the DeWalt 5-in-1 in 2023, and WOOD compared parallel clamps on a page updated in 2025. These are dated observations, not our tests or proof of a universal 2026 winner.

Current does not always mean newly released. We checked the newer DeWalt DCD803 20V system and Festool’s overseas TXS TBX bundle as well as existing alternatives. They do not automatically displace a suitable compact US kit. Smaller shared tools are chosen for documented design and fit; we do not invent a luxury version of every component.

Set up a workshop that fits the work.

Start with prepared lumber. Choose dry, straight, surfaced-four-sides boards—often labeled S4S—with square edges. Poplar is a useful starting material for small painted indoor projects. Rough timber, reclaimed painted wood, structural work and sheet-goods breakdown need equipment or precautions outside this list.

Match the project to the station. Keep the first assembly within the bench and clamp capacities. Clamp the work before cutting or drilling, protect the surface with sacrificial scrap and keep the blade path clear. A bench rating is not permission to stand on it or leave a long board unsupported.

Keep dust out of the home. Connect the hand block to the extractor and use suitable ventilation. Vacuum remaining dust or use appropriate damp cleanup; avoid compressed air and dry sweeping. A respirator supplements these measures. The CCOHS wood-dust guidance explains why even small-scale work deserves a dust plan.

WHAT EACH PIECE DOES

The essentials, with their trade-offs.

Sjöbergs Elite 1500 — SJO-33246

$2,520.00one item · dated US reference

A substantial beech bench with two vises is our premium foundation for a dedicated small workshop. Its mass and thick top provide a more planted working station than a folding table, with room to grow into hand-tool joinery. The 1500 keeps the footprint more manageable than the longer Elite 2000.

The trade-offIt is a permanent, heavy purchase, not something to pack away after dinner. Confirm access, delivery arrangements and a comfortable working height before ordering. The quoted bench does not include the storage cabinet seen in some photographs.

Fit in the kitBudget includes one bench and its four supplied steel dogs. Use scrap wood between metal holding surfaces and your project. The listed overall footprint is about 59⅝ × 29⅛ in.; working height is about 35⁷⁄₁₆ in.

WORX Pegasus WX051

$139.99one table · $139.99 listed promotion

The folding Pegasus suits a garage that still needs to hold a car. Its clamping tracks, two supplied clamps and four dogs make it a usable workholding station rather than just a spare tabletop. A published hands-on review supports its quick setup and practical clamping arrangement.

The trade-offThe smaller, lighter table is less suited to forceful hand-planing or large assemblies. Its 32 in. working height may be low for some users. The reviewer also found that clamps could fall from their storage clips during setup.

Fit in the kitLock both wings, place all feet on a firm level surface and keep the work supported. Use the supplied clamps in the tracks; the separate Besseys below are assembly clamps, not replacement track clamps.

Starrett C11H-12-4R Combination Square — 12 in.

$156.39one item · dated US reference

The hardened steel rule, satin-chrome finish and cast-iron head make this a lasting layout tool. It checks right angles, marks a repeated offset and gives you a straight edge for pencil lines. We prefer one versatile 12 in. square to a starter box of loosely specified measuring tools.

The trade-offThe price buys construction and a clear, durable scale; we have not measured this sample against the iGaging. Inspect every new square, including this one, with a line-and-flip check against a known straight edge.

Fit in the kitSelect the 12 in. C11H-12-4R satin-chrome model, not the default 6 in. variant. Add a tape measure for lengths beyond the rule, and use a sharp pencil rather than the metal scriber on visible wood faces.

iGaging 34-212-2 Combination Square — 12 in.

$34.99one item · dated US reference

A steel rule with inch graduations and a sliding head covers the same everyday layout jobs at a much lower cost. For straightforward shelves and storage boxes, it is our value starting point, provided the individual tool passes a squareness check.

The trade-offWe have not verified equal machining quality or accuracy to the Starrett. Check that the head locks firmly and stays square as you move it along the blade; return an inaccurate sample instead of correcting every cut around it.

Fit in the kitChoose the single 12 in. 34-212-2, not a two-square bundle. Keep one reference edge and one measurement system through the project.

Gyokucho / Razorsaw 651 Ryoba — 9½ in.

$50.99one item · dated US reference

Separate crosscut and rip teeth on a replaceable blade cover short cuts across and along the grain. The fine hardwood-oriented crosscut edge suits small poplar projects where a controlled cut matters more than speed. It offers a useful first saw at either budget.

The trade-offThe thin blade cuts on the pull stroke and can kink if forced on the return. It is slower than a powered saw and is not a practical way to break down full sheets. Its hardened teeth are replaced with the blade rather than routinely filed at home.

Fit in the kitClamp narrow, already surfaced boards with the cut clear of the bench and support the offcut. Buy boards near the required width; have long rips or large panels cut by the supplier. Keep the blade guard for storage.

Festool TXS 18 HPC 4.0 I-Set — US 576903

$499.00complete US set · two batteries and charger

A compact body, interchangeable chucks and a right-angle attachment make this a refined drill for small assemblies. The full set supplies two 4.0 Ah batteries and a charger. Fine Woodworking’s identified-model test supports its convenient handling and useful endurance.

The trade-offIt costs much more than the DeWalt and will not make a poorly marked hole accurate. Standard hex accessories do not lock directly into the proprietary CENTROTEC chuck. The newer overseas TBX battery bundle is distinct from this documented US set.

Fit in the kitUse the supplied keyless chuck for ordinary drill bits and the included compatible bit holder for standard driver bits. This is the full 576903 set, not the battery-free Basic. US charging equipment requires the specified US mains supply.

DeWalt XTREME DCD703F1 12V MAX 5-in-1 Kit

$199.00complete US kit · one battery and charger

The compact DeWalt supplies four attachments, a 2.0 Ah battery and charger in one usable purchase. Its keyless chuck handles pilot holes while the right-angle and offset heads help inside a small box. An independent comparison favored its compact versatility over the Bosch 12V Flexiclick.

The trade-offOnly one battery is included, so you may pause to recharge. It is a small-project drill, not our choice for repeated large holes or structural fasteners. The newer DCD803 uses a different 20V system; it is not a free upgrade within this kit.

Fit in the kitChoose DCD703F1, not a bare tool. Use the 3/8 in. keyless chuck for the countersink bits if needed and a correctly sized driver bit for the selected screws. A normal drill you already own may cover these jobs.

DeWalt DW2535 Countersink Set — #6, #8, #10

$33.99one three-piece set

Three pilot-and-countersink sizes cover common flat-head wood screws without buying a large general-purpose accessory kit. Adjustable depth lets you set the pilot for the board and screw rather than drilling blindly to the full bit length.

The trade-offThe number on the cutter is not a universal prescription for every screw or wood species. Check runout and test the pilot and recess in matching scrap. A screw clearance hole through the outer board can require a separate straight bit.

Fit in the kitUse in drilling mode, with the work clamped and backed by scrap. Match pilot size to the screw maker’s guidance and the wood. Driver bits are separate; a small provision for them and any needed clearance bit appears in the budget.

Bessey K Body REVO KRE3524 — 24 in.

$59.44per clamp · buy two

Broad parallel jaws support a small case or glued assembly with less need to balance narrow clamp pads. WOOD’s comparison found the Revo’s jaw action and bar stiffness convincing. Two 24 in. clamps are a practical start for the small projects defined here.

The trade-offThey are heavy compared with F-clamps and do not automatically square crooked parts. Maximum advertised force is not the goal: check diagonals and tighten only enough to close a properly fitted joint.

Fit in the kitThe basket includes two individual clamps. Work on one small assembly at a time, use scrap cauls where needed and buy longer or additional clamps only when a project’s dimensions require them.

Bessey GSCC2.524 Clutch Bar Clamp — 24 in.

$24.99per clamp · buy two

A steel bar and screw-adjusted pad provide versatile pressure for a much smaller outlay. These two clamps complement the Pegasus’s included workholding clamps, so the table can hold a board while the separate pair is used for assembly.

The trade-offSmall pads need scrap protection and more attention to alignment than parallel jaws. Check the assembly for twist as pressure is applied; do not use extra force to disguise a poor joint.

Fit in the kitBudget two individual 24 in. clamps, not a four-pack. They work independently of either bench; they are not intended to fit the WORX tracks or the Sjöbergs dog holes.

Festool HSK-A 80 × 130 — 496962

$69.00one item · dated US reference

This hand block connects to an extractor, combining slow, controllable sanding with collection at the pad. It is a deliberate shared investment: a dust connection is more useful here than adding a powered sander before you know your projects.

The trade-offHand sanding is slow on large panels, and extraction does not capture every particle. Its hard flat pad is not a contour sander. The block needs separately purchased compatible abrasive sheets.

Fit in the kitUse 80 × 133 mm hook-and-loop abrasives with the appropriate extraction pattern. The supplied Festool hose adapter connects to the selected extractor’s 27 mm tool end; the bypass and suction control help prevent the block sticking.

Festool CT 15 HEPA — US 578441

$449.00one item · dated US reference

The current US CT 15 gives both paths the same compact extraction and cleanup system, with adjustable suction, a supplied hose, filter bag and cleaning nozzles. Its matched connection to the hand block avoids making the beginner solve an adapter puzzle.

The trade-offIt is a significant part of the value budget. A suitable existing HEPA extractor can replace it after checking the hose fit, filtration and instructions. This is not a large-chip collector for a planer or a room air purifier.

Fit in the kitSelect 578441, not the replaced 577413 listing. Use the correct bag and filter for dry dust, connect the sanding block before work, and clean remaining dust with the nozzles. This US unit is 120 V; follow its manual and empty it carefully.

3M SecureFit 400 Clear — SF400C-WV-6-PS

$13.98one clear pair

A clear, lightweight pair with flexible temples is a sensible starting point for indoor layout, sawing and drilling. We retain the same protection in both paths; premium spending belongs in useful tool improvements, not a lower safety baseline for the value reader.

The trade-offSafety glasses are not sealed dust goggles and this model is not a universal fit over prescription eyewear. Select rated over-glasses protection or prescription safety eyewear if needed.

Fit in the kitTry the glasses with the respirator and hearing protection. They must sit securely without breaking either seal. Replace scratched or damaged lenses and use the protection appropriate to the operation.

GVS Elipse P100 — SPR457 M/L

$29.99one M/L mask with P100 filters

The compact reusable half-mask comes with its particulate filters and keeps a relatively low profile around other equipment. It supplements dust capture and careful cleanup; it does not make an uncontrolled dusty room an acceptable workshop.

The trade-offFit decides usefulness. M/L is only the priced example; choose the size that seals on your face, follow the fit instructions and check the seal each time. Facial hair in the sealing area prevents a reliable seal. These filters do not protect against finish or solvent vapors.

Fit in the kitThe budget buys one mask with filters, not replacement filters alone. Use the maker’s matching replacements and wear eye protection separately. Do not remove dust controls because you are wearing a respirator.

3M PELTOR X4A Over-the-Head Earmuffs

$34.99one item · dated US reference

Relatively slim cups and replaceable cushions make these a practical companion to the rest of the protection. Keep them ready when drilling or running extraction and whenever the task’s noise requires protection.

The trade-offThe US NRR of 27 dB is a laboratory rating, not a promise that every sound at your ear falls by 27 dB. Fit, glasses and hair affect the seal; louder future machinery may need a different protection assessment.

Fit in the kitChoose the over-the-head X4A, not helmet-mounted cups. Check the glasses and respirator straps do not lift the cushions. Follow the maker’s fitting and maintenance directions.

The small supplies that complete the station.

Set aside $75 as a planning allowance: $15 for a tape measure and pencils, $25 for compatible abrasive sheets, $15 for ordinary project screws and matching driver/clearance bits, $10 for wood glue, and $10 for sacrificial scrap and simple cauls. These are estimates, not checked product offers; buying full retail packs may cost more.

For the HSK block, start with appropriate 80 × 133 mm extraction-compatible sheets around P120 and P180; add other grits as the wood and finish require. Ordinary paper covering the extraction holes defeats the reason for this block. Use glue and screw lengths suited to the joint rather than one universal fastener recipe.

Project lumber, cutting service, finish, wall fixings, improved lighting and storage are additional. A shelf’s mounting hardware depends on the wall and intended load. The guide equips a workspace; it is not a load-rated furniture plan or a spray-finishing setup.

Make your first session a small success.

Choose the plan, then the wood. Use a reputable beginner plan for a small open organizer with simple square parts. Ask the supplier to cut boards to manageable widths and lengths. Check actual thickness: the nominal size on the rack is not necessarily the finished dimension.

Practice on an offcut. Mark from one reference edge, clamp securely and test a short crosscut. Let the pull saw do the cutting; do not push a flexible blade through resistance. Drill and countersink a test joint, then adjust the pilot, depth and driver clutch before touching the project.

Dry-fit before glue. Confirm the pieces meet, check diagonals and arrange clamps before the glue’s open time starts. Follow the plan for joint orientation and fasteners. Sand reachable faces while they are still accessible, then assemble and allow the glue its specified cure time.

Finish with cleanup. Remove the drill battery before changing accessories or clearing a jam. Keep loose clothing, hair and gloves away from rotating bits. Clean the work area, store the saw with its guard and follow each product’s operating instructions. Get hands-on instruction before adding unfamiliar powered cutting machines.

Optional: Matching face clamp$19.99$19.99
With the pocket-hole jig and face clamp$4,111.19$1,240.88

The $75 allowance covers the five estimated supply lines above, not a verified bundle. Equipment alone totals $3,976.21 or $1,105.90. Prices exclude sales tax, shipping and any bench freight or delivery service.

Already needed: an appropriate workspace with power, ventilation, lighting and enough clearance. Additional project costs: prepared lumber, cutting services, finishing products, wall fixings and any extra fasteners. The optional jig includes sample screws; they are not a promise of enough suitable screws for your plan.

Reuse makes a large difference. With a suitable existing bench, drill and HEPA extraction system, the value basket’s remaining equipment and allowances total $392.91. This assumes the extractor connects correctly to the sanding block and the existing tools meet the project’s needs. It does not remove the need for those functions.

You can mix the paths. A permanent bench is the largest premium expense; the folding table, premium square and either drill can be a sensible combination. Choose for the work and the space, not for a matching brand.

Add pocket-hole joinery when you need it.

The two optional items below form one upgrade: a Kreg 320 jig and its compatible face clamp, $59.98 together. Both quality paths can use it. The jig’s sample screws are useful for practice; allow separately for the correct project screws once the plan and thickness are known.

A powered sander, track saw, chisels or a hand plane can make sense later, but each introduces its own support, dust or sharpening needs. Add the capability your next project requires instead of buying an entire machine shop up front. If you are organizing several hobbies, the Beginner Sewing Kit shows a separate craft station; keep fabric work away from wood dust.

Kreg Pocket-Hole Jig 320 — KPHJ320

$39.99one item · dated US reference

The portable two-guide jig adds an accessible joinery method for suitable shelves and small cases. It earns its place when visible screw heads become a design problem; ordinary properly prepared screw joints remain enough for your first practice project.

The trade-offPocket holes are not ideal for every grain direction or load. The jig needs a clamp, correct screws and settings matched to actual material thickness. It is not a substitute for a sound project plan.

Fit in the kitThe US 320 includes its stepped bit, stop collar, thickness gauge, square driver and sample screws. Pair it with the face clamp below; choose the correct screw length and thread using Kreg’s guide. Buy additional project screws as required.

Kreg Classic 2 in. Face Clamp — KHC-MICRO

$19.99one item · dated US reference

The dedicated face clamp works with the 320’s clamp adapter and helps keep adjoining faces aligned during assembly. Including it makes the optional pocket-hole addition a usable purchase rather than an incomplete advertised jig price.

The trade-offIts 2 in. reach limits how far it can work from an edge. It does not replace the longer bar clamps for holding an entire assembly together.

Fit in the kitThe maker specifies material up to 2¼ in. thick. Adjust pressure for the work, use the jig’s adapter as instructed and check flush alignment before driving the screws.

A few decisions, made simpler.

Can I start without a table saw? Yes, for the small prepared-board projects described here. A pull saw handles short cuts; the lumber supplier handles wide panels and long rips. That scope is what keeps the first station manageable.

Do I need the expensive bench? No. It is the premium choice for someone committing to a permanent workshop. A stable existing bench or the folding WORX can be a better fit, even if you can afford the Sjöbergs.

Why is the value total still substantial? It includes a work surface, dust collection and protection—not just a drill and a saw. Reusing a suitable bench, drill and HEPA extraction system changes the cost considerably. Do not compare a bare-tool price with a complete workspace budget.

Why no hand plane or chisels in the starter list? Prepared boards and simple screw joints avoid making sharpening and fine joinery compulsory on day one. Those tools become useful when the projects call for them; add the sharpening equipment and instruction at the same time.

Does a dust mask cover finishing? Not automatically. The chosen P100 filters are for particles, not solvent vapors. Follow the finish’s safety information and ventilation requirements; finishing can require a different setup entirely.

Research, sources and what to recheck.

Researched for the US market on October 6, 2026. This is a research-based editorial selection, not our own hands-on test. Current manufacturer and retailer listings establish the exact variants and contents; linked independent tests inform only the models and tasks they actually examined.

The bench, square and smaller-accessory choices depend more on construction, fit and editorial judgment than on a current whole-market comparison. The CT 15 selected here is the newer US 578441; older 577413 tests are not transferred. Festool’s US 576903 package is still listed, but seller availability is inconsistent and the exact bundle must be confirmed.

Prices are dated USD planning references before tax, freight and delivery. The saw and square totals use the current retailer variant data rather than older promotional search excerpts. Special-order delivery for the sanding block and bench, tool fit and current prices need rechecking before purchase. Product choice is independent of commission; no affiliate links are active.
